Since mid-May, the most important port city of Colombia, Buenaventura, has been on strike against poverty and unemployment. In the city, which has a population of 415 thousand, 60% of the foreign trade of the country, 80% of the coffee exports, and mostly Afro-Colombia, the unlimited strike started by the people on 15 May continues.

Although the harbor city located in the south west of the country along the Pacific Ocean is so important for the country's trade, the people have very poor living conditions. According to Junge Welt in Germany, 64 per cent of the population is poor and 10 per cent are hungry under the poverty line. According to official figures, unemployment is 62 percent.

The infrastructure of this important commercial city is almost collapsed. In the city where unemployment and poverty are so high, drug gangs, mafia fathers are constantly terrorizing the people. Buenaventura port is also said to have a major precaution in bringing drugs out of the country at the same time.
