Announcement Regarding 8/5/18 Shooting - WORT 89.9 FM - At approximately 3 AM Sunday morning, a man wearing a mask and hood entered the WORT station and opened fire on three DJs in the broadcast studio. Witnesses say five shots were fired, injuring one DJ in the buttocks and shattering the glass between studios. The injured DJ was sent to the hospital and quickly discharged. There were no major injuries or fatalities. After the shooting, police secured the area and did not allow DJs entry to the premises. Due to the investigation, the station experienced radio silence Sunday morning before resuming normal programming at 9:38 AM. A motive is still unknown and it is unclear how the assailant entered the building. Police say there is no sign of forced entry. Police do not have a suspect in custody. We want to thank everyone for the support. Already, the phone calls and concerned messages are flowing into the station. Our station has faced many challenges over our 40 years on the Madison airwaves. And, as always, the community has responded to lend a hand. This is when the community in community radio shines. Board President David Devereaux-Weber was notified as soon as police arrived and was on scene shortly after the shooting. Multiple volunteers arrived individually in the early hours of the morning to help get the station back on its feet. The station is back on the air and will be tightening security. Thank you to everyone for their help during these times. –30– Edit: This post previously stated there were two people in the studio at the time of the shooting. There were three.
