At this years UN Permanent forum on Indigenous Issues the Indigenous Environmental Network in solidarity with our brothers and sisters from the south organized some critical side events to highlight the grave danger to our human rights, land access, sovereignty and self determinations that the UN/World Bank REDD initiative poses.

REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation)

WHAT IS IT? CO2lonialism of Forests

• Created under the United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change funded by the World Bank,17 governments,
companies & NGOs; UN-REDD program and other REDD initiatives
are in the works.

• Generates permits to pollute or “carbon credits” by promising
not to cut down forests and plantations

• Includes forests in the carbon market

• Commodifies and privatizes forests –carbon traders will
require legal title to the carbon in the forests or to the land

• Profits for loggers, deforesters & polluters18

• Reduces forests to mere carbon sequestration
more violations of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights.

"It will increase the violation of our Human Rights, our rights to our lands, territories and resources, steal our land, cause forced evictions, prevent access and threaten
indigenous agriculture practices, destroy biodiversity and culture diversity and
cause social conflicts. Under REDD, States and Carbon Traders will
take more control over our forests.”
