Councilor sorry for comments about ‘Indians’: Shannon Fitzgibbons, a city councilor in Columbia City, has apologized for miscategorizing Native American history in a city newsletter.

In the recent edition of her “Flash from the Past” column, the councilor said she never meant to “hurt or denigrate another culture.”

In January’s Columbia City newsletter, Fitzgibbons wrote about “hostile Indians” and misrepresented Native American culture for this region. “I can just hear the drums beating and see the canoes racing up and down the river arranging for a big powwow to discuss whether or not they were going to let these foreigners build a fort here... apparently the vote was no!!!” she wrote.
