School's apology not what family was expecting - Shawano Leader - Shawano, WI: Parents of the seventh-grade girl who was benched from a basketball game last month for speaking the Menominee language in class are not satisfied with the apology issued Wednesday by the principal.

The seventh-grader's mother, Tanaes Washinawatok, said her daughter, Miranda, was not allowed to play in the Sacred Heart Catholic School basketball game Jan. 19 after being reprimanded that day for using the Menominee language during a homeroom supervised by teacher Julie Gurta.

The 12-year-old was told she could not play because of "attitude issues" after allegedly translating hello, I love you and thank you, to two of her classmates.

Washinawatok said the letter was not the public apology agreed upon last week by school officials, tribal legislators and the family.

"It was supposed to be issued to Miranda, the family and the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin," she said.
