Tell President of Peru to Stop the Violence around Mining - Amnesty International USA
4.8.12
Take Action Now - Amnesty International USA: On July 3rd, 2012, a demonstration against mining project called Conga, situated in the Northern Peruvian region of Cajamarca, turned deadly when the police opened fire at random killing five people. Peruvian authorities imposed a state of emergency in three northern provinces in response to the incidents, which also resulted in several injuries and scores of arrests.
Perdepends on mining. Over 2 billion dollars per year are collected in taxes by the state. Earlier this year, the Peruvian government placed charges against 59 Cajamarca leaders, accusing them of “extortion” and “disrupting state government.” Human rights abuses continue against indigenous people in the context of social protests against large-scale mining projects.
