PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 18, 2012 (Ottawa ON) – The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) recognizes October 18th as a National Day of Action to end violence against Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.

President Michèle Audette sends a message of remembrance and support to all Aboriginal families who have lost a loved one to violence. She says, “On this National Day of Action, we remember our loved ones who have been lost to violence, and we hold close to our hearts all Aboriginal family members who have experienced the tragedy of violence within their family.”

On this National Day of Action, NWAC promotes the importance of taking a few quiet minutes to personally reflect upon our own health and well-being, and how we each can act to make non-violence a personal choice in all our dealings with one another.

Together in partnership with the Assembly of First Nations and other Aboriginal organizations that work tirelessly to address this critical issue, NWAC supports measures that raise awareness of this crisis of violence. These actions include signing a petition (http://www.nwac.ca/sites/default/files/download/NWAC/2012%20NWAC%20Inqui... ) or sending a postcard to ask the Federal Government to call a National Inquiry into the crisis of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls, asking your local leaders to support this call for a National Inquiry, or reaching out to support families and communities that have lost loved ones to violence. NWAC will also be participating in a webinar with the Assembly of First Nations on October 18, 2012 from 2pm – 3pm (EST). A link to this event can be found at www.afn.ca.
