Time for tent embassy to fold, says Tony Abbott | News.com.au - Four Aboriginal men - Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Bertie Williams and Tony Coorey - set up the Aboriginal Tent Embassy by planting a beach umbrella at the site on January 27, 1972. The foursome were angry at the McMahon Liberal government's refusal to recognise Aboriginal land rights. Since then the tent embassy has become a focal point for protest over Aboriginal sovereignty. Mr Abbott said he understood why the tent embassy was set up "all those years ago". However,it was time it was disbanded, he said.
