500 high schools use 'Redskins,' 'Indians,' or 'Braves' as team name - The Tell - MarketWatch: That’s because the use of “Redskins,” “Braves,” and “Indians,” as team names is deeply entrenched in the U.S. In fact, more than 60 high school teams use “Redskins” as a team mascot, according to data compiled on Wikipedia.
More than a dozen high schools across the country use “Braves,” also the name of Atlanta’s professional baseball team. And at least 435 high schools use “Indians,” also the name of Cleveland’s professional baseball team. That’s equivalent to one “Indians” team for every congressional district. Added together that’s more than 500 teams with native-American derived names. And that doesn’t even count “Warriors,” “Savages,” “Chiefs,” or names derived from specific tribes such as “Cherokees,” “Mohawks,” or “Mohicans.”
