Canada faces national crisis in living conditions of Indigenous people |The Brock Press: Another disturbing issue that Anaya came across in one specific community is that there has been at least one suicide every six weeks since the beginning of the year 2013. This First Nation community is Pukatawagan in Manitoba, which is located 900 kilometres north of Winnipeg. A resident of the community, Lorna Bighetty, lost her son four years ago to suicide and she claims that help is necessary to do something about the poverty in her community. Since her son Shawn’s passing, there have been as many as 27 more suicide deaths in Pukatawagan, which has some 2, 500 residents. “It is very depressing to know that so many of our kids are leaving us this way,” Bighetty told Anaya. Similar situations are happening in many First Nations communities.
