Peaceful protest held Friday morning in Alderville | Northumberland Today

Peaceful protest held Friday morning in Alderville | Northumberland Today: The peaceful gathering was about educating the general public about what is happening across Canada.

"The time for shooting native people in this country is long gone and over and (Prime Minister Stephen) Harper should be ashamed of himself that they moved in with brute force against women and children who were standing up to protect the water," said organizer Suzanne Smoke.

The Mi’kmaq of Elsipogtog have been staging demonstrations in New Brunswick and throughout the summer there have been numerous arrests.

A pamphlet handed out to drivers on County Rd. 45 said although the compound is not on reserve land, it is on territory that the Mi’kmaq consider to be their traditional hunting ground, and they fear tests will lead to a "fracking operating that will cause irreparable environmental damage to their community and the sourrounding area."

"It’s up to those nations of man if they are going to protect the water or go forward with this corporate greed," said Smoke.
