http://lakotalaw.org: Rather than obtaining or referencing testimony from Native people, Schumacher-Matos instead relied almost exclusively upon DSS sources during his research and writing. According to NPR’s editors:

“Despite [Schumacher-Matos'] sweeping claims, the only source that figures in any significant way in the ombudsman's account is a (D.S.S.) state official whose department activities were the subject of the series.”
We have testimony from more than 100 Lakota parents and grandparents who have documented that their human and federal right to raise their children has been violated by the state of South Dakota, and who speak of the negative impact that the state of South Dakota has upon Lakota families.
