Maori Party renews calls for Parihaka Day

The Maori Party is refreshing calls for Parihaka Day to be observed on the 5th of November, as we remember the strength of our tupuna, and the courageous history of peaceful protest in Aotearoa.

“Why are we celebrating Guy Fawkes today, when on this day in 1881 we have our own New Zealand story of courage, bravery and protest,” says Maori Party Co-leader Tariana Turia.

“On November 5th here in Aotearoa we should remember the 2000 people of Parihaka who sat in peaceful resistance, when in 1881 the Crown launched a violent invasion of their community.”
