Editorial: Symbolism of Confederate flag is undeniable | Concord Monitor: To mine selective histories in order to secure Southern absolution is an act of willful ignorance, pure and simple. In fact, Confederate Vice President Alexander Stevens himself left no question about the motives of the Confederacy when he delivered his “Cornerstone” address in 1861: “Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition.”

It’s unfair to say that every person who defends the display of the Confederate flag is racist; only they know what is in their heart. But any attempt to use what is in their own heart to explain away what is in the hearts of others, such as Dylann Roof, is absurd. To say “I fly the Confederate flag but I’m not racist, therefore the Confederate flag is not racist” is logic at its most flawed.

To deny the falling of the rain does not make it so.
