WASHINGTON D.C. Today, two Lakota youth,
representing the Indigenous Environmental Network and One Mind Youth
Movement, will be speaking at a mass civil disobedience event in front
of the White House demanding justice on race, climate and immigration.
They will be joining thousands of other youth of different backgrounds
in the event called, “Our Generation, Our Choice”.
Trenton CasillasBakeburg and Jasilyn Charger, both 19, are from the
Cheyenne River Sioux reservation in central South Dakota and belong to a
local youth organization called One Mind Youth Movement, OMYM.
The event will begin with a large rally, followed by a march and civil disobedience action in front of the White House.
Statement from Our Generation Our Choice event organizers: “One
year out from the presidential election, youth fighting for justice on
race, climate, and immigration will take to the streets of our nation’s
capital demanding that candidates and elected officials align their
agendas with the imperatives of the crises of our time. After years of
political inaction and failure, young are engaging in the political
process to demand that our country invest in those things that make our
communities thrive, and lead an economy in crisis to a society that
works for all people.”
“I’m here because fossil fuels are killing the Ecosystem,” says Trenton CasillasBakeburg. “Greed
is destroying our way of life, and the only people who can save the
people are the people. The planet doesn’t need us, we we need it, and
as Earth Defenders it is our job to not stop until every man, woman, and
child can live in a society of 100% renewable energy.”
