Afternoon of demonstrations brings Newcastle city centre to a standstill - Chronicle Live: The English Defence League (EDL) and Newcastle Unites marched along separate routes though the city centre on Saturday lunchtime.

Donning England flags and placards, around 70 people were on the far right protest, who spent 30 minutes walking from the Haymarket to the Bigg Market .

They were jeered by some bystanders as they chanted during march, which was organised in the wake of Operation Sanctuary - the court cases which have shocked the city.
